Peter Vanmier, an abstract painter and multimedia artist, was born in ‘s Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. He earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in Biology from Leiden University and a Doctorate degree (PhD) in Neuroscience from Nijmegen University. In 1988 he and his family moved to St. Louis, USA where he continued neuroscience research at Washington University.
During this period he developed a keen interest in the arts and in 1996 he transitioned from science to art, devoting all his time to making handbuilt ceramics. Progress was swift and soon he found himself teaching ceramics classes and giving Raku firing demonstrations at Art Fairs. His ceramic art is in private collections in the USA and Europe.
Presently, Vanmier is fully occupied with painting and multimedia art. Searching for ways to understand how art is and comes to be from seemingly unrelated elements that together form images. Like pixels in a digital image at high magnification appear to be without information, zooming out may render that collection of dots suddenly very informative. How do individual fragments perform in a whole that is so much more than the sum of its constituent parts?
